Rapid Development

By 2025, there are already several hundred AI tools available, especially in the field of generative AI. ChatGPT reached over 100 million users in less than two months after its launch in 2022 and now has around 600 million monthly users. In total, more than 250 million people worldwide used AI tools in 2023. By 2030, that number is expected to exceed 1 billion.

In 2024, over 70% of businesses were already using AI in some form, indicating widespread adoption across various industries. The global AI software market has grown from around $10 billion in 2018 to an estimated $126 billion by 2025, with an average annual growth rate of 35%.

The technological breakthrough that has driven the rapid development of generative AI since around 2020 is based on several interrelated advancements. At the core is the Transformer model, introduced in 2017, which began to show its full potential in the following years. Unlike earlier neural networks that could only process data sequentially, the Transformer can analyze relationships between words in parallel, making models significantly more powerful.

Between 2018 and 2020, projects like GPT-2 and GPT-3 demonstrated that, given sufficient size and data, Transformers are capable of producing remarkably coherent and creative text. OpenAI, Google, and others discovered that simply scaling up model parameters and training data led to disproportionately better results, a concept known as Scaling Laws. As a result, GPT grew from a few million to hundreds of billions of parameters. At the same time, the computing power required for training became widely accessible thanks to specialized hardware like NVIDIA GPUs and cloud infrastructure.

But it wasn’t just the architecture or size of the models that mattered. Another key was the introduction of Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF), implemented around 2022. This approach allows AI models to learn not only from data, but also from human input about which responses are helpful, accurate, or polite. This made the models more suitable for everyday use, safer, and easier to guide.

Image generation also underwent a major transformation. While earlier image AIs like GANs were unstable and difficult to control, starting in 2021, diffusion models such as those used in DALL·E 2 or Stable Diffusion brought a significant leap in quality. They generate images by gradually transforming noise into realistic scenes, offering creative control over style, composition, and content.

Advances in both text and image generation soon converged into multimodal models. GPT-4, Gemini, and Claude 3 can understand and combine various input types such as text, images, and even audio. This enabled new use cases ranging from diagram analysis to video description and the integration of language with code and visuals. This versatility greatly contributed to the broad acceptance of generative AI. At the same time, the availability of web interfaces like ChatGPT, Midjourney, or Synthesia dramatically lowered the barrier to entry. Millions of people can now interact with powerful AI tools without prior technical knowledge, driving explosive adoption worldwide.
